Ben Crenshaw Speaker Profile: At A Glance

Ben Crenshaw won his first tournament in the fourth grade with a score of 96. At fifteen, he won the state junior tournament and in 1968 he took his first national title at the Jaycees Junior Championship. Throughout college Ben's sole concentration was on golf. After clinching his third NCAA title in 1973, and winning 10 other championships that year, Ben qualified as a PGA professional. Ben will always be remembered for his two Masters Tournament and Ryder Cup wins.

Ben Crenshaw's journey in golf began in Austin, Texas, where he was born on January 11, 1952. His passion for the game ignited early, leading him to play collegiate golf at the University of Texas. There, he secured three consecutive NCAA Championships from 1971 to 1973, showcasing his exceptional talent and setting the stage for a remarkable professional career. Turning professional in 1973, Crenshaw made an immediate impact by winning the San Antonio-Texas Open in his debut as a PGA Tour member. Over the years, he amassed 19 PGA Tour victories, including two Masters Tournament wins in 1984 and 1995. His smooth putting stroke and calm demeanor earned him the nickname "Gentle Ben," endearing him to fans and peers alike. In 1999, Crenshaw took on the role of captain for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Facing a 10-6 deficit heading into the final day, he famously expressed unwavering confidence in his team, stating, "I have a good feeling about this." His belief was well-founded, as the U.S. team mounted a historic comeback to clinch victory, solidifying his legacy as a leader. Beyond playing, Crenshaw has made significant contributions to golf course architecture. Since 1986, he has partnered with Bill Coore in the design firm Coore & Crenshaw, creating courses that are celebrated for their strategic design and harmony with natural landscapes. Crenshaw's dedication to golf extends to preserving its history and traditions. His profound respect for the game's heritage, combined with his experiences as a player, captain, and designer, makes him a respected figure in the golfing community.
