Ben Sherwood is an American writer, journalist, and media executive known for his leadership roles and contributions to literature. Born on February 12, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, he grew up in a family deeply engaged in public service. His father, Richard E. Sherwood, was a prominent attorney and leader within the American Jewish Committee, while his mother, Dorothy Lipsey Romonek, served as a trustee for the California Institute of the Arts.
Sherwood's academic journey led him to Harvard College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1986 with a degree in American government and history. Pursuing further studies as a Rhodes Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford, he earned master's degrees in British imperial history and development economics. During his time at Oxford, he also played for the university's men's basketball team, showcasing his diverse interests.
Embarking on a career in journalism, Sherwood joined ABC News in 1989 as an associate producer for "PrimeTime Live," working alongside Diane Sawyer and Sam Donaldson. He later transitioned to NBC's "Nightly News with Tom Brokaw," serving as a senior producer and senior broadcast producer. In 2004, he returned to ABC News as the executive producer of "Good Morning America," leading the program through two highly successful seasons. By December 2010, Sherwood was appointed president of ABC News, and in 2015, he ascended to the role of co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of the Disney ABC Television Group, overseeing a vast portfolio of television properties.
Beyond his executive roles, Sherwood is a bestselling author. His novels include "The Man Who Ate the 747" (2000) and "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud" (2004), the latter of which was adapted into a feature film starring Zac Efron in 2010. In the nonfiction realm, he authored "The Survivors Club" (2009), exploring the science of survival and resilience. In 2021, Sherwood founded MOJO, a tech and media platform aimed at enhancing youth sports experiences. Under his leadership, MOJO garnered accolades, including a Webby Award for Best Sports App. The platform was acquired by TeamSnap in December 2023, where Sherwood now serves on the board.
In April 2024, Sherwood took on the role of publisher, CEO, and co-owner of The Daily Beast, partnering with Joanna Coles and Barry Diller.
