Bilkis Bano was born in 1981 in the village of Radhikpur, located in the Dahod district of Gujarat, India. She grew up in a modest household, where her father ran a milk-selling business. Her early life was marked by the simplicity and close-knit community typical of rural India. In 2002, during the Gujarat riots, Bilkis endured a horrific ordeal that would change the course of her life. While fleeing communal violence, she and her family were attacked by a mob. Tragically, fourteen members of her family were killed, including her three-year-old daughter. Bilkis, who was five months pregnant at the time, was subjected to a brutal gang rape but survived the attack. Despite the trauma, Bilkis displayed remarkable courage by seeking justice. Her pursuit led to a landmark legal battle that highlighted systemic failures in addressing crimes against women during communal unrest. In 2008, a special court convicted eleven men for their involvement in the crimes against her and her family. Bilkis's unwavering determination has made her a symbol of resilience and justice in India.
