He conducts field-based research in settings such as healthcare, software services, consulting, call centers, and retail, using archival data and field experiments to provide an interdisciplinary perspective that contributes to improving operations in both theory and practice. In addition to his academic roles, Staats works with companies around the world to develop their learning and analytics strategies. He is the author of the award-winning book Never Stop Learning: Stay Relevant, Reinvent Yourself, and Thrive, which provides a practical framework for becoming a dynamic learner. His teaching and research focus on improving individual learning and designing organizations that create successful learning environments. Staats has received several accolades for his contributions to academia and practice, including the Wickham Skinner Early-Career Research Accomplishments Award from the Production and Operations Management Society and the Warren Bennis Prize for the best article in Harvard Business Review on leadership. He holds a Doctorate of Business Administration in technology and operations management and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He also earned a Bachelor of Science with honors in electrical engineering and a Bachelor of Arts with high honors in Plan II and Spanish from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was named the Most Outstanding Male Graduate of his class. Before his academic career, Staats worked as a venture capitalist, in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, and in strategic planning at Dell Corporation. He lives in Chapel Hill with his wife and three sons, where he enjoys coaching his sons' baseball teams and participating in the local community.
