Briana Scurry, renowned as one of the most talented and influential goalkeepers in the history of soccer, has made an indelible mark both on and off the field. She began her illustrious career as the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in 1994, leading the team to victory in two Olympic Games and the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Scurry’s iconic save in the penalty shootout of the World Cup final against China is celebrated as one of the defining moments in American sports history. Scurry’s contributions extend beyond her athletic achievements. As one of the first African American and openly gay professional female athletes, she has championed equality and diversity in sports. Her efforts have been recognized with her induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017 and her inclusion in the permanent Title IX exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2022, Scurry released her memoir, "My Greatest Save," which details her remarkable career, the trials she faced after her injury, and her mission to inspire others.
