Brooke Axtell is a human rights advocate, writer, and performing artist based in Austin, Texas. As the Director of Strategic Partnerships at The SAFE Alliance, she works to end sexual and domestic violence through community engagement and survivor-centered initiatives. Her professional journey is deeply informed by personal experiences with abuse and trafficking, which she has transformed into a mission of empowerment and systemic change. Axtell’s advocacy began with her own story. At age seven, she was trafficked by a caregiver while her mother was hospitalized. Later, she survived an abusive relationship in adulthood. These experiences shaped her understanding of trauma and healing, leading her to found She is Rising, a nonprofit that supports women and girls overcoming rape, abuse, and sex trafficking. Through this organization, she fosters a healing community rooted in resilience and creative expression. In 2015, Axtell brought national attention to the realities of domestic violence when she performed a spoken word piece at the Grammy Awards, following a message from President Obama and preceding a performance by Katy Perry. Her appearance was a powerful call to action, urging audiences to confront the prevalence of abuse and support survivors. Beyond her work at SAFE and She is Rising, Axtell is a member of the Speaker’s Bureau for RAINN, the largest anti-sexual assault organization in the U.S., and serves on the Gender Equality Impact Panel for Katerva. She is also the author of Beautiful Justice: Reclaiming My Worth After Human Trafficking and Sexual Abuse, a memoir that explores her path to healing and advocacy. Through storytelling, public speaking, and strategic partnerships, Brooke Axtell continues to challenge cultural narratives around abuse and promote pathways to justice and recovery. Her work exemplifies how personal truth can inspire collective transformation.
