Butch Harmon Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Butch Harmon is widely recognized as one of the best golf instructors in the world. He has coached some of the sport’s greatest players, including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. As President of the Butch Harmon School of Golf, he has shaped the careers of many top professionals. Harmon’s influence extends beyond coaching, as he is also a respected commentator and author. His contributions have earned him a place in the World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame.
Butch Harmon, born Claude Harmon Jr. on August 28, 1943, in New Rochelle, New York, is a renowned American golf instructor and former professional player. Growing up in a golf-centric family, he was introduced to the game by his father, Claude Harmon Sr., a 1948 Masters Champion and head professional at Winged Foot Golf Club. Butch's brothers—Craig, Bill, and Dick—also pursued careers in golf, earning the Harmon family the unofficial title of "First Family of Golf." He attended the University of Houston and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War before turning professional in 1965.
Harmon's professional playing career included a victory at the 1971 Broome County Open. However, he soon shifted his focus to golf instruction, drawing inspiration from his father's keen eye for swing mechanics and his own experiences as a club professional. In the 1970s, he served as the personal instructor to King Hassan II of Morocco, further honing his teaching skills. Returning to the U.S., Harmon became known for his ability to simplify complex swing concepts, making them accessible to golfers of all levels.
In 1986, Harmon began coaching tour players, starting with Steve Elkington and later working with Davis Love III. His most notable collaboration was with Tiger Woods from 1993 to 2004, during which Woods secured eight major championships. Harmon also coached Phil Mickelson from 2007 to 2015 and has worked with other prominent golfers such as Greg Norman, Dustin Johnson, and Rickie Fowler. His students have collectively achieved numerous victories and top rankings in the golf world.
Beyond his teaching, Harmon has contributed to the sport through media and writing. He served as a lead analyst for British Sky Broadcasting for over 20 years, covering major tournaments like The Masters and the Ryder Cup. He has authored several instructional books, including "The Pro: Lessons About Golf and Life from My Father," sharing insights from his extensive experience. In recognition of his impact on the game, Harmon was inducted into the Golf Digest Legends of Golf Instruction and continues to influence the sport through his work at the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Henderson, Nevada.
