Candice Carty-Williams is a British-Jamaican author, showrunner, and cultural commentator based in South London. Born in 1989, she studied communication and media at the University of Sussex before entering the publishing industry. Her debut novel, Queenie, was published in 2019 and quickly became a bestseller. It won the British Book Awards’ Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award. The novel was adapted into an eight-episode television series, which premiered on Channel 4 in June 2024 and is available to stream on Hulu, Channel 4, and Star+. In 2016, Carty-Williams founded the Guardian and 4th Estate Short Story Prize for underrepresented writers, aiming to increase diversity in UK publishing. She has written for various publications, including The Guardian, Vogue, i-D, The Sunday Times, BEAT Magazine, and Black Ballad. Her second novel, People Person, was published in 2022 and also became a Sunday Times bestseller. Additionally, she authored the young adult novella Empress & Aniya, which was released in 2020. Carty-Williams' work often explores themes of identity, race, and mental health, with a focus on Black British experiences. She is also known for her contributions to television, having served as the showrunner and executive producer for the drama series Champion, which aired on BBC One in 2023 and is available on Netflix globally.
