Born and raised in Bali, Indonesia, Melati witnessed firsthand the environmental degradation that was threatening the island's natural beauty. At the age of 12, this prompted her to co-found Bye Bye Plastic Bags with her sister, Isabel. Their mission was clear: to eliminate the use of plastic bags in Bali and beyond.
The initiative quickly gained traction, turning Melati into a formidable voice in the realm of environmental advocacy. Under her leadership, Bye Bye Plastic Bags went from a small, youth-driven campaign to an influential international movement. In 2019, their efforts culminated in a significant victory when Bali officially banned single-use plastic bags, straws, and styrofoam. Beyond Bye Bye Plastic Bags, Melati expanded her advocacy to broader educational streams. She also co-founded the social enterprise Mountain Mamas, empowering local women in Bali through economical upcycling of waste into saleable products.
