Nadia Murad is a human rights activist and leading advocate for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. Her work focuses on raising awareness globally of the genocide against the Yazidi people and the systemic use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. She advocates for the nearly 3,000 kidnapped Yazidi women and children who remain missing since the genocide in 2014 and works tirelessly to educate the international community on the use of sexual violence by violent regimes, advocate for survivors of sexual violence globally, and support the sustainable re-development of the Yazidi homeland.
In 2018, Nadia was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Dr. Denis Mukwege, and together, they founded the Global Survivors Fund to improve access to reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence across the globe. In 2019, Nadia was appointed as a UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocate.
As a member of France’s Gender Advisory Council, Nadia advocated for G7 member states to adopt legislation to protect women’s rights. She worked with the German Mission to the United Nations to pass UN Security Council Resolution 2467, expanding the UN’s commitments to end sexual violence in conflict. Nadia was also a driving force behind UN Security Council Resolution 2379, which established the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD).
Nadia is Co-Founder and President of Nadia’s Initiative, which implements extensive programming globally, with a particular focus on Iraq. In 2024, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi Genocide, Nadia led the commission of the Yazidi Genocide Memorial to honor Yazidis who suffered and died at the hands of ISIS, the opening of Nadia’s Initiative Women Center to provide a safe community space for women, and the launch of “Mother and Justice” mobile memorial to raise awareness globally of the injustices faced by Yazidis and the need for accountability.
