Zazel-Chavah O’Garra is a multifaceted artist, educator, and advocate whose journey from a celebrated performer to a pioneering voice in disability inclusion exemplifies resilience and transformation. Born and raised in New York City with Caribbean heritage, Zazel's early exposure to music and movement was influenced by her father, a jazz musician who played with the Count Basie Orchestra. Her passion for dance ignited at the age of eight, leading her to study ballet and tap at Ruth Williams Dance Studio in Harlem. This foundation propelled her to the High School of Performing Arts and later to the University of Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in dance performance. As a Presidential Arts Scholar, she performed with the Mark Dendy Dance Company and Alvin Ailey Workshop II, gracing stages in the U.S. and Europe. Her modeling career included appearances on the covers of Essence magazine and work in national commercials. In 2003, Zazel's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with meningioma, a benign brain tumor. The subsequent surgery left her partially paralyzed, with a speech impediment and cognitive challenges. Despite these setbacks, she chose to redefine her path, embracing dance as a form of healing and self-expression. She founded ZCO/DANCEPROJECT in 2013, a physically integrated dance company that fosters the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the arts. The company's performances are characterized by their wit, soul, and power, aiming to challenge societal perceptions and inspire audiences. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Zazel holds a Master's degree in Social Work from Fordham University. She has worked with organizations such as the Brain Injury Association of New York State and YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities, serving as an adaptive dance instructor. Her advocacy extends to national platforms; in 2014, she was an inaugural member of the White House Disability Liaison. Her work has been featured in performances at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the Guggenheim Museum, among others. Zazel's commitment to inclusivity and empowerment continues to inspire and effect change in the realm of dance and beyond.
