Electrical Engineer, Engineering & Science Communicator, The First Mexican-born Woman in Space

Dr. Katya “Kat” Echazarreta, the first Mexican-born woman in space, is an electrical engineer, science communicator, and civilian astronaut. Echazarreta worked at NASA, first as an intern during her university undergraduate career, and later, with five NASA missions including Perseverance and Europa Clipper Ground Support Equipment group. She is a first-generation student who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Through honesty about the difficulties and encouragement, she hopes to be able to help women be better prepared for their experience as a woman in STEM.

Veteran Laila Ireland is a retired Healthcare Management and Administration Specialist and served for 12 years in the United States Army. In 2015 Laila and her then fiancé, Sgt Logan Ireland, courageously came out as transgender service members by sharing their story in the Emmy®-nominated New York Times short film "Transgender, at War and in Love.” Today, Laila advocates for transgender equality by speaking in schools and businesses across our nation. She serves as the Membership Director to SPART*A Trans; an organization of over 600+ members established and operated for and by trans* military individuals, and she is a board member for Point of Pride.
