Ai-jen Poo is a next-generation labor leader, award-winning organizer, author, and a leading voice in the women’s movement. She is the President of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Director of Caring Across Generations, Co-Founder of SuperMajority and Trustee of the Ford Foundation. Ai-jen is a nationally recognized expert on elder and family care, the future of work, gender equality, immigration, narrative change, and grassroots organizing.
Ai-Jen Poo is a dedicated leader and a transformative force in the realm of social justice and labor rights. Her career has been marked by an enduring commitment to improving the lives of domestic workers and caregivers in the United States. Born to parents who were immigrants from Taiwan, Ai-Jen developed an early awareness of the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Driven by a profound sense of responsibility to elevate voices too often unheard, she has spent decades as a relentless advocate for change.
In 2000, Ai-Jen co-founded Domestic Workers United, a New York-based organization that worked tirelessly to secure labor protections for nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers. Her visionary leadership was instrumental in achieving the passage of New York State’s Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in 2010—the first of its kind in the country. This landmark legislation set a precedent, ensuring basic labor protections like overtime pay and days off, which previously had been denied to hundreds of thousands of domestic workers.
As the Executive Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), Ai-Jen has further propelled her mission on a wider national stage. Under her guidance, the alliance has grown into a powerful coalition representing over two million domestic workers nationwide. Her strategic focus on policy, advocacy, and coalition-building has redefined the boundaries of labor activism, fostering a movement characterized by inclusivity, empathy, and strength.
Beyond her grassroots efforts, Ai-Jen’s influence stretches into numerous spheres. She has been recognized by countless organizations for her contributions, serving on the boards and advisory committees of influential labor and women's rights initiatives. She also co-founded the Caring Across Generations campaign, which sheds light on the importance of caregiving and advocates for improved policies across the caregiving landscape.
Ai-Jen Poo’s dedication to her work extends to her speaking engagements, where she passionately communicates the stories and struggles of those she represents. With a keen ability to connect and inspire, she offers not only poignant insights into the realities facing caregiving workers today but also a powerful vision for a more equitable future. Her narratives, filled with resilience and hope, drive home the critical message that dignity and justice must be at the heart of our society’s foundation.
