Barenaked Ladies is a Canadian rock band formed in 1988 in Scarborough, Ontario, by Ed Robertson and Steven Page. Initially a duo, they expanded to include brothers Jim and Andy Creeggan and drummer Tyler Stewart. Their 1991 independent release, The Yellow Tape, became the first indie release to go platinum in Canada, leading to a deal with Reprise Records and the release of their debut studio album, Gordon, in 1992.
The band's popularity grew with the release of Rock Spectacle in 1996, a live album that featured the single "The Old Apartment," gaining them attention in the United States. Their 1998 album, Stunt, marked a significant breakthrough, with the single "One Week" reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album's success solidified their presence in the U.S. market and earned them multiple Juno Awards.
In 2009, co-founder Steven Page departed the band. Despite this change, Barenaked Ladies continued to produce music and tour, releasing several albums, including Detour de Force in 2021 and In Flight in 2023. Their adaptability and commitment to their craft have allowed them to maintain a dedicated fan base and a respected position in the music industry.
In recognition of their contributions to Canadian music, Barenaked Ladies were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Their innovative approach to music and performance continues to inspire both fans and fellow musicians alike.
