Bertrand Piccard Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Bertrand Piccard is a renowned Swiss explorer, psychiatrist, and environmental advocate. He made history as the first person to complete a non-stop balloon flight around the world in 1999. In addition to his groundbreaking adventures, Piccard has dedicated himself to promoting renewable energy and clean technologies. As a passionate speaker, he shares his insights on innovation, sustainability, and the spirit of exploration. His work continues to inspire people to push boundaries while embracing environmental responsibility.
Bertrand Piccard was born on March 1, 1958, in Lausanne, Switzerland, into a family renowned for its spirit of exploration. His grandfather, Auguste Piccard, was the first person to reach the stratosphere by balloon, and his father, Jacques Piccard, designed and piloted deep-sea bathyscaphes. Growing up surrounded by tales of adventure, Bertrand developed a passion for pushing boundaries. He became an expert hang-glider pilot in his youth and later piloted ultralight planes and hot-air balloons. Despite his adventurous pursuits, he earned a medical degree and established a practice in psychiatry in Lausanne.
In 1999, Bertrand and British aeronaut Brian Jones achieved the first non-stop, around-the-world flight in a balloon. The journey lasted 19 days, 21 hours, and 55 minutes, covering over 45,000 kilometers and crossing 26 countries. This feat set records for both distance and duration in aviation history.
Building on his passion for innovation and sustainability, Bertrand co-founded the Solar Impulse project in 2003 with Swiss engineer André Borschberg. Their goal was to develop a solar-powered airplane capable of circumnavigating the globe without using fuel. After years of development, Solar Impulse 2 completed its journey in 2016, demonstrating the potential of renewable energy in aviation.
Beyond his achievements in exploration, Bertrand has been a vocal advocate for integrating ecological responsibility with economic growth. In the early 2000s, he began promoting renewable energies and clean technologies as viable business opportunities. He served as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment and as a Special Advisor to the European Commission. In 2016, he founded the Solar Impulse Foundation, aiming to identify and promote 1,000 profitable solutions to environmental challenges.
Through his diverse endeavors, Bertrand Piccard exemplifies the synergy between exploration, innovation, and sustainability. His life's work continues to inspire others to pursue ambitious goals while remaining mindful of our planet's future.
