Brandon Routh is an American actor best known for portraying Superman in the 2006 film Superman Returns and Ray Palmer/The Atom in The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in the nearby town of Norwalk, Routh grew up in a Methodist household with English, Scottish, German, Irish, Welsh, and Dutch ancestry. During his youth, he was active in sports, music, and theater, and he developed a fondness for Superman comics and films. He attended the University of Iowa for a year, aspiring to be a writer, while modeling and acting to earn tuition.
Routh began his acting career with minor roles in television, including appearances on Odd Man Out, Undressed, Gilmore Girls, and One Life to Live. His breakthrough came when director Bryan Singer cast him as Superman, impressed by Routh's resemblance to Christopher Reeve and his Midwestern roots. Superman Returns received mixed reviews, but Routh's performance was widely acknowledged.
