Brenda Romero is a BAFTA award-winning game designer, Fulbright scholar, entrepreneur, and advocate for diversity in the gaming industry. Born Brenda Louise Garno on October 12, 1966, in Ogdensburg, New York, she began her career in 1981 at the age of 15, making her one of the longest-serving women in the video game industry. She worked for Sir-tech Software, contributing to the Wizardry and Jagged Alliance series, before moving on to Atari and Electronic Arts. Romero has since worked with numerous companies in the social and mobile gaming space. In 2015, she co-founded Romero Games in Galway, Ireland, with her husband, John Romero. As CEO, she led the development of Empire of Sin, a strategy role-playing game set in Prohibition-era Chicago. The game was released in December 2020 and received mixed to average reviews. Romero is also known for her non-digital game series, The Mechanic is the Message, which uses board games to explore complex social issues. Her game Train (2009), which simulates the Holocaust, has been featured in museums and received the Vanguard Award at IndieCade. Throughout her career, Romero has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2017 Development Legend Award at the Develop conference and the 2015 Ambassador Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards. She has also been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in gaming, aiming to make the industry more welcoming for all.
