Brian Acton is an American computer engineer and entrepreneur best known as the co-founder of WhatsApp and the Signal Foundation. Born in Michigan in 1972 and raised in Florida, Acton earned a degree in computer science from Stanford University in 1994. He began his career in tech with roles at Apple and Yahoo, where he met Jan Koum, his future WhatsApp co-founder.
In 2009, Acton and Koum launched WhatsApp, a messaging app that prioritized simplicity and user privacy. The app quickly gained global traction, leading to its acquisition by Facebook in 2014 for approximately $19 billion. Acton remained with WhatsApp until 2017, when he departed due to disagreements over Facebook's plans to monetize the platform and integrate user data across services.
Following his departure, Acton co-founded the Signal Foundation in 2018 alongside Moxie Marlinspike, investing $50 million of his own funds to support the development of Signal, an encrypted messaging app. As executive chairman and interim CEO, Acton has championed Signal's mission to provide open-source, privacy-focused communication tools free from commercial pressures.
Beyond his work in technology, Acton is a committed philanthropist. Along with his wife, Tegan, he established Wildcard Giving, which encompasses several foundations dedicated to supporting low-income families and promoting social equity. Through both his entrepreneurial ventures and philanthropic efforts, Acton continues to advocate for privacy, security, and ethical practices in the digital age.
