Brian Cox Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Brian brings scientific discovery to life for millions. He is also a leading experimental physicist, helping to recreate the conditions 1/1000000000th of a second after Big Bang “to confirm the universe’s underlying simplicity.” With breathtaking images, Brian shows how science shocks and excites our imagination, as well as bringing humanity together. He also sets out the case for co-ordinated investment in science as key to job creation and growth.
Professor Brian Cox is a British physicist, broadcaster, and author renowned for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging to the public. Born on March 3, 1968, in Oldham, England, Cox developed an early fascination with the cosmos, inspired by Carl Sagan’s Cosmos at the age of 12. This interest led him to pursue physics, earning a first-class degree from the University of Manchester in 1995 and a Ph.D. in high-energy particle physics in 1998. His doctoral research focused on diffractive scattering at the HERA particle accelerator in Hamburg, Germany.
Before his academic career, Cox was a keyboardist in the British bands Dare and D:ream during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His involvement with D:ream included the hit song "Things Can Only Get Better," which became an anthem for the Labour Party's 1997 election campaign. Despite the band's success, Cox chose to leave music behind to focus on his scientific endeavors. He joined the ATLAS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider and has been involved in various research projects, including the FP420 R&D project at CERN.
Cox's transition from musician to physicist did not mark the end of his public presence. He has become a prominent science communicator, presenting several BBC documentaries such as Wonders of the Solar System, Wonders of the Universe, and Human Universe. Additionally, he co-hosts the BBC Radio 4 program The Infinite Monkey Cage with comedian Robin Ince, blending science with humor to engage audiences. His ability to convey the beauty and excitement of science has earned him numerous accolades, including the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize and the Lord Kelvin Award.
Beyond his professional achievements, Cox is also known for his personal life. He is married to Gia Milinovich, a science presenter and writer, and they have one son. The family resides in London, where Cox continues to balance his roles as a professor at the University of Manchester, a researcher at CERN, and a public advocate for science. His journey from the music stage to the scientific stage exemplifies his passion for discovery and his commitment to inspiring others to explore the wonders of the universe.
