After briefly attending the University of Portland, Malarkey pursued his culinary aspirations by enrolling at Le Cordon Bleu in Portland. His professional journey began at the esteemed Citrus restaurant in Los Angeles, where he had the privilege of working alongside culinary legend Julia Child.
Malarkey's culinary career gained significant momentum when he became a finalist on Season 3 of Bravo's Top Chef. He further solidified his television credentials as a winning mentor on ABC's The Taste, co-hosted with Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, and Ludo Lefebvre. His television appearances also include judging roles on Food Network's Guy’s Grocery Games, Tournament of Champions, and Beachside Brawl, among others.
In the realm of restaurant ventures, Malarkey has established over 15 successful concepts across the United States. He was the founding executive chef and partner of Searsucker and Herringbone, which expanded to more than 10 locations before being sold to the Hakkasan Group in 2014. Subsequently, he co-founded the Puffer Malarkey Collective with his longtime business partner, Christopher Puffer. This collective has launched several acclaimed establishments in San Diego, including Herb & Wood, Herb & Sea, Animae, and Le Coq. Additionally, Malarkey has ventured into Oregon with the opening of Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge in Bend, a modern cowboy steakhouse, and plans to debut a second concept in Portland in 2025.
Beyond his culinary endeavors, Malarkey is the founder of Chefs Life, a line of premium cooking oils designed to simplify the cooking process for home chefs. A portion of the proceeds from Chefs Life supports the Golden Rule Charity, aiding hospitality workers in need. Malarkey is also active in philanthropy, supporting organizations such as Rady Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He resides in San Diego with his partner, Harley D., and their three children, while also spending time in Central Oregon.
