Brian Urlacher Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Throughout his Hall of Fame NFL career, Brian Urlacher was well-renowned for his ability to make plays. But to be the type of player who could affect the outcome of a game at any moment took more than athleticism, more than intelligence—it took a philosophy centered on forward momentum. Brian is now taking the “Next Play” mentality that made him an 8-time Pro Bowler on the gridiron and applying it to his post-football career.
Brian Urlacher is a former professional football linebacker who played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bears in the NFL. Born on May 25, 1978, in Pasco, Washington, he was raised in Lovington, New Mexico, after his parents separated. His mother, Lavoyda, worked tirelessly to support him and his siblings, instilling in him a strong work ethic that would define his career. At Lovington High School, Urlacher excelled in multiple sports, earning All-State honors in football and basketball. Despite his talents, he was overlooked by major college programs and began his collegiate journey at the University of New Mexico.
At New Mexico, Urlacher's versatility stood out. He played safety, linebacker, and even returned punts, showcasing his athleticism and football IQ. In his senior year, he earned consensus All-American honors and was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. His college performance led to his jersey number, 44, being retired by the university, a testament to his impact on the program.
Drafted by the Chicago Bears with the ninth overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, Urlacher quickly made his mark in the league. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and went on to become an eight-time Pro Bowler. In 2005, he was honored as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Over his career, he recorded 1,358 tackles, 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, and 90 passes defensed, solidifying his reputation as one of the premier linebackers of his era.
Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Urlacher was known for his leadership and dedication to the Bears organization. He was a two-time recipient of the Brian Piccolo Award, given to the team's most courageous player. His commitment to the game and his team earned him respect from peers and opponents alike. Following his retirement in 2013, Urlacher was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018, cementing his legacy in football history.
Today, Urlacher continues to influence the sports world through his involvement in various ventures and his commitment to community initiatives. His journey from a small-town athlete to a Hall of Fame linebacker serves as an inspiration to aspiring players and fans, exemplifying the power of perseverance and passion in achieving greatness.
