At Utah State, he serves as the Director of the Crop Physiology Laboratory in the Department of Plants, Soils & Climate. Dr. Bugbee's research focuses on controlled environment agriculture, including hydroponics and plant growth in space. He has been involved in NASA-funded projects studying plant growth in microgravity and has contributed to the development of crop production systems for long-term space missions. His work aims to ensure sustainable food sources for astronauts during extended space travel. In 1996, Dr. Bugbee founded Apogee Instruments, Inc., a company that designs and manufactures scientific instruments for environmental and agricultural research. What began as a personal project to create affordable sensors in his garage has grown into a globally recognized company, employing over 30 people and providing tools used by researchers worldwide. Throughout his career, Dr. Bugbee has received numerous accolades, including being named a Fellow of both the American Society of Agronomy and the American Society for Horticultural Science. He was awarded the Utah Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology in 2012 and the D. Wynne Thorne Career Research Award in 2016, Utah State University's highest research honor. He has authored or co-authored over 350 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has delivered invited talks at universities and conferences around the world. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Bugbee is known for his community involvement. He and his wife, Diana West, have cultivated a themed garden at their home in Logan, Utah, which serves as a local landmark and is used for community events. Their garden has been featured in various media outlets, highlighting their commitment to both science and community engagement.
