Bruce Sterling is an American science fiction author and a seminal figure in the cyberpunk movement. Born in 1954 in Brownsville, Texas, he began his literary career in the 1970s, publishing his first novel, Involution Ocean, in 1977. Sterling's work often explores the intersection of technology, society, and design, with notable novels including Schismatrix (1985), Islands in the Net (1988), and The Difference Engine (1990), co-authored with William Gibson. His contributions to the genre have earned him prestigious awards such as the Hugo, John W. Campbell Memorial, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards. He co-founded the Viridian Design Movement, which advocates for environmentally sustainable and technologically advanced design. His nonfiction works, including The Hacker Crackdown (1992) and Shaping Things (2005), delve into topics like digital culture and the future of design. Sterling's ability to blend speculative fiction with real-world technological discourse has established him as a thought leader in both literary and design communities. In 2007, Sterling relocated to Turin, Italy, where he lives with his wife, Serbian author and filmmaker Jasmina Tešanović. Together, they have undertaken various creative projects, such as the "Phoenix Renewed" initiative at Villa Abegg, aiming to revitalize historical spaces through contemporary narratives. Sterling also contributes to the local cultural scene, writing columns for La Stampa and participating in events like the SHARE Festival of Digital Art and Culture. Sterling's influence extends beyond his written work; he has been a "Visionary in Residence" at institutions like ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena and the Center for Science and the Imagination at Arizona State University.
