Bruce Vilanch is a seasoned comedy writer, songwriter, and actor whose career spans over five decades in the entertainment industry. Born in New York City in 1947 and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, he was adopted shortly after birth by Jonas and Henne Vilanch. His mother, a former Broadway showgirl, nurtured his early interest in show business, even securing him a child modeling gig with Lane Bryant's "Charming Chub" division. Vilanch attended Ohio State University, where he studied theater and journalism, participating in student theater productions and writing reviews. After graduating in 1970, he began his career as a feature writer for the Chicago Tribune, which led to his first collaboration with Bette Midler. Vilanch's move to Los Angeles in the early 1970s marked a significant shift in his career. He co-wrote for various variety shows, including The Donny & Marie Show, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special, and the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. Despite the mixed receptions of these projects, they showcased his ability to craft memorable content. His versatility as a writer led him to work with a diverse array of entertainers, such as Lily Tomlin, Robin Williams, Roseanne Barr, and Whoopi Goldberg. Vilanch's collaboration with Goldberg extended to Hollywood Squares, where he served as head writer and celebrity panelist from 1998 to 2002. Beyond the Oscars, he has written for other major award shows, including the Tony Awards, Grammy Awards, and Emmy Awards. His contributions to the entertainment industry have solidified his reputation as a respected comedy writer. In addition to his writing career, Vilanch has made notable appearances on stage and screen. In 2005, he portrayed Edna Turnblad in the Broadway production of Hairspray, a role that earned him acclaim for his performance. He has also appeared in various television shows and films, including The Simpsons, Celebrity Fit Club, and You Don't Mess with the Zohan. His distinct appearance, characterized by his platinum blonde hair and signature glasses, has made him a recognizable figure in the entertainment world. Beyond his professional achievements, Vilanch is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has been involved in numerous charitable endeavors.
