Bryan Konietzko is an American animator, writer, and director best known as the co-creator of the acclaimed animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, The Legend of Korra. Born on June 1, 1975, in Georgia, Konietzko developed a passion for storytelling and visual art early on. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. His career began in the animation industry, where he contributed to various projects, including character design for Family Guy and art direction for Invader Zim.
In 2005, Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino pitched Avatar: The Last Airbender to Nickelodeon, blending Eastern philosophies, martial arts, and intricate world-building. The series received critical acclaim for its storytelling and cultural representation. Following its success, Konietzko and DiMartino co-created The Legend of Korra, which premiered in 2012, exploring themes of modernity and social justice. Their creative partnership, known as "Bryke," has been instrumental in shaping the Avatar universe.
After concluding The Legend of Korra, Konietzko took a brief hiatus from animation to recharge creatively. This period allowed him to explore new ideas and projects. In 2021, he and DiMartino co-founded Avatar Studios, a division of Nickelodeon dedicated to expanding the Avatar universe through new animated series and films. The studio's first project, an animated film featuring an adult Aang, is set to release on January 20, 2026.
Beyond animation, Konietzko is also a musician and photographer. He is the frontman of the band Ginormous, which has released several albums, including Our Ancestors' Intense Love Affair and At Night, Under Artificial Light. He resides in Los Angeles, California, with his wife, Lisa, continuing to inspire audiences with his creative endeavors and contributions to the world of animation.
