Dr. DeForest Blake “Buster” Soaries Jr. is a seasoned Baptist minister, civic leader, and financial literacy advocate based in New Jersey. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he earned his Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary. Throughout his career, he has been committed to bridging faith, community development, and social justice.
From 1990 to 2021, Dr. Soaries served as the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, New Jersey. Under his leadership, the church grew into a vibrant, multicultural congregation of over 6,000 members. He pioneered the dfree® Financial Freedom Movement in 2005, a program designed to help individuals break free from debt and achieve financial independence. The movement has since expanded globally, with initiatives in South Africa, Ghana, and Botswana.
In addition to his pastoral work, Dr. Soaries has held significant public service roles. He made history as the first African American male to serve as New Jersey’s Secretary of State from 1999 to 2002. He also chaired the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, overseeing the implementation of the Help America Vote Act of 2002. His commitment to community development led him to found several nonprofit organizations, including the Central Jersey Community Development Corporation and Harvest of Hope Family Services Network.
Dr. Soaries' impact extends internationally. In partnership with the Okyenhene of the Akyem Abuakwa Kingdom in Ghana, he initiated development projects in the Akaa Community, including the construction of a playground and a soccer field. He also facilitated the building of a church in Kyebi and introduced the dfree® movement to Africa, empowering communities to achieve financial freedom.
Now retired from active ministry, Dr. Soaries continues to influence through his writings and speaking engagements. His book, Say Yes to No Debt, outlines the principles of the dfree® movement and offers a practical guide to financial freedom. Residing in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, with his wife, Donna, and twin sons, Malcolm and Martin, Dr. Soaries remains a respected voice in faith-based community development and financial empowerment.
