Callie Brownson is a pioneering football coach who has made significant strides in professional and collegiate football. Born on October 15, 1989, in Mount Vernon, Virginia, she was raised by her father, Bruce B. Brownson. During her time at Mount Vernon High School, she played softball, as the football team did not allow girls to participate. Her passion for the sport led her to George Mason University, where she earned a degree and later tried out for the D.C. Divas, a team in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA). She played for the Divas from 2010 to 2017, excelling as a safety, running back, and slot receiver. Over her eight-season career, she served as team captain for five years and was named All-American four times. Additionally, she was a two-time gold medalist with the U.S. Women's National American Football Team, winning at the International Federation of American Football's Women's World Championships in 2013 and 2017. Transitioning from player to coach, Brownson began her coaching career at Mount Vernon High School, where she served as an assistant coach for three seasons starting at age 21. In 2017, she took a significant step by becoming a scouting intern for the New York Jets, marking her entry into professional football. The following year, she joined the Buffalo Bills as a coaching intern, gaining valuable experience in the NFL. In 2018, she made history by becoming the first woman to be hired as a full-time NCAA Division I football coach when she was appointed as an offensive quality control coach at Dartmouth College. Her role at Dartmouth was a groundbreaking achievement in collegiate football. Brownson joined the Cleveland Browns in 2020 as the team's Chief of Staff. In her first season, she made NFL history by becoming the first woman to coach an NFL position group during a regular-season game when she served as the acting tight ends coach in a Week 12 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. She also filled in as the acting wide receivers coach during a Week 17 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2023, she was promoted to assistant wide receivers coach, further solidifying her role in the NFL. In early 2025, Brownson transitioned to a new role as the Senior Director of High Performance & National Team Operations at USA Football.
