Candice Bergen is an American actress, writer, and photojournalist whose career spans over six decades. Born into Hollywood royalty on May 9, 1946, in Los Angeles, she is the daughter of ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and model Frances Bergen. Candice made her first screen appearance at age 11 on Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life and later studied at the University of Pennsylvania before transitioning into modeling and acting. Her early film roles include The Group (1966) and The Sand Pebbles (1966), and she gained recognition for her performances in Carnal Knowledge (1971) and Gandhi (1982), the latter earning her a BAFTA nomination. In 1988, Bergen achieved iconic status with her portrayal of Murphy Brown, a sharp-witted television journalist, in the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown. The role earned her five Primetime Emmy Awards and sparked national conversations on topics like single motherhood and media representation. Bergen declined further Emmy nominations after her fifth win. She later portrayed Shirley Schmidt on Boston Legal (2005–2008), earning additional Emmy nominations. Beyond acting, Bergen has authored two memoirs: Knock Wood (1984) and A Fine Romance (2015). The latter reflects on her marriage to French director Louis Malle and her experiences as a mother and widow. She has also worked as a photojournalist, with her work appearing in magazines like Life and Playboy. In 2016, Bergen began painting on designer handbags, a venture known as BergenBags, with proceeds benefiting animal charities. Her daughter, Chloé Malle, manages the business.
