He served as Executive Director and Chairman of the Sierra Club from 1992 to 2010, overseeing the organization's growth to 1.2 million members. Under his leadership, the Sierra Club launched the "Beyond Coal" campaign, successfully blocking or leading to the withdrawal of 150 proposed coal-fired power plants. This initiative played a pivotal role in reducing the nation's carbon emissions and advancing the transition to cleaner energy sources.
Beyond his tenure at the Sierra Club, Pope has been actively involved in various environmental and policy organizations.
