Jade Ellis Mathis Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Jade Ellis Mathis, known as “The Resilient JEM,” is an attorney, public speaker, and mental health advocate dedicated to mental health awareness and criminal justice reform. Drawing on her personal journey of resilience and experience as a prosecutor, she champions alternatives to incarceration, rehabilitation, and systemic change. Dubbed the “Expungement Guru”, she now serves as an influencer and criminal justice reform proponent providing organizations with information and strategies to foster rehabilitation and reform.
Jade Ellis Mathis, also known as “The Resilient JEM,” is an attorney, TEDx speaker, mental health advocate, and civil rights champion whose life and career exemplify resilience, perseverance, and purpose. Inspired by her father, the host of the Emmy Award-winning Judge Mathis show, Jade pursued her own path in law and public service, overcoming significant personal and academic challenges along the way.
During her junior year of college, Jade received life-changing diagnoses of clinical depression, ADHD, and a learning disorder. Rather than allowing these challenges to define her limitations, she transformed her experiences into a catalyst for advocacy, dedicating herself to changing the way society understands and approaches mental health. Her bold, authentic, and unapologetic voice has inspired audiences across the country. In 2016, she gained national attention when her powerful testimony of resilience and perseverance, “Don’t Quit, Anything Can Happen,” went viral, garnering nearly one million views.
Jade went on to serve as a nontraditional prosecutor for six years, specializing in criminal justice reform. In 2016, she created the Back on Track–Prince George’s County diversion program, an alternative-to-incarceration initiative modeled after the Back on Track program established by then California Attorney General Kamala Harris. Her work in criminal justice reform, expungements, and second-chance initiatives reflects her commitment to creating pathways to opportunity and helping individuals overcome barriers to success.
Her commitment to justice continued in Washington, D.C., where she served as a civil rights attorney under the leadership of nationally recognized attorney Ben Crump, representing families in cases involving police-involved fatalities. Through her legal career, Jade has remained dedicated to advancing accountability, protecting civil rights, and advocating for families and communities seeking justice.
Beyond the courtroom, Jade has established herself as a sought-after keynote speaker and mental health advocate. She has served as a mental health influencer and keynote speaker for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Black Greek Letter Consortium. Her story and advocacy have also been featured in People, Essence, E!, NBC, MSNBC, FOX, TMZ, CNN, The CW, Rolling Out, and The Root, among other national media outlets.
Across every chapter of her journey, Jade has remained steadfast in her commitment to advocacy, equality, inclusion, and opportunity. Whether advancing civil rights, championing criminal justice reform, or challenging the stigma surrounding mental health, Jade Ellis Mathis continues to turn resilience into purpose and purpose into impact.
