Jim Craig Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Leadership expert Jim Craig is best remembered for his outstanding goaltending in the "Miracle on Ice" during the 1980 winter Olympics. In what has been labeled the greatest sports moment of the 20th century, the United States hockey team beat the heavily favored Russians and went on to win the Olympic gold medal. The legendary tale of the team led by Jim Craig was immortalized in the Disney feature film "Miracle". Drawing upon both his experiences as a world-class athlete, and as an accomplished 20-year plus market service representative in charge of over $30 million of print advertising sales annually, Craig has first-hand insight into what it takes to overcome long odds to become a champ.
Jim Craig is best known as the backbone of the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Team, whose 'Miracle' win was voted by Sports Illustrated as the greatest moment in sports history of the 21st century. Craig, who started every game in goal, was a leading figure in the team’s success. One of the enduring images of the 1980 Games was Craig, wrapped in an American flag, searching the stands for his widowed father to share the gold-medal-winning victory.
Before the Olympics, Jim was an All-American goalie at Boston University, leading his team to an NCAA national championship. After the 'Miracle' game, Jim went on to play professionally for three NHL teams, but his career was cut short by a severe injury while playing for the Minnesota North Stars. He is enshrined in the Boston University Hall of Fame, the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame, the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. Additionally, he is a co-recipient of both the Lester Patrick Award and Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year" award. Jim is a Boston University graduate and earned a doctorate in humane letters from Mercy College.
Following his professional hockey career, Jim transitioned into the corporate world as a motivational speaker, successful salesman, and corporate consultant. He has been inducted into the Sales Halls of Fame for two companies, having increased a sales territory from $300,000 to $50 million in annual sales. Later, Jim became Vice President of a promotional marketing agency, where he helped increase annual sales by 80 percent and expanded the client base by 30 percent in two years.
For over 30 years, Jim has inspired, instructed, and provided strategic direction to some of the world’s leading companies, including Kellogg's, Bayer, Deloitte, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, and Disney. As the owner and president of his company, Gold Medal Strategies, he has been recognized three times as one of the top five speakers on team building in the United States. His motivational speeches and immersive corporate training programs teach participants how to think differently and achieve their potential. Jim is the co-author of the business book Gold Medal Strategies: Business Lessons from America's Miracle Team and recently released We Win! Lessons on Life, Business, & Building Your Own Miracle Team.
In addition to leading Gold Medal Strategies, Jim serves as a board member of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. He is deeply passionate about using his athletic and business achievements to help others reach their full potential and lives in alignment with this mission every day.
