Dr. Joel Selanikio practices pediatrics at Georgetown University Hospital, served as a CDC epidemiologist, and co-founded Magpi, a mobile data platform used in more than 170 countries. The clinic shows him how care is delivered. Epidemiology shows him how health changes across populations. Building Magpi taught him how technology companies build products, price them, and compete. From those three vantage points, he describes two forces reshaping healthcare: 1 - Five Migrations: Knowledge, Diagnosis, Treatment, Monitoring, and Interpretation are moving from clinicians to consumers. Example: women can now screen for cervical cancer at home with the Teal Wand, no clinic visit required. 2 - Demand Elimination: Prevention removes some need for care. Example: GLP-1 use rose 140% from 2022 to 2024; bariatric surgery fell 34%. Consumers gain. Health systems, insurers, and life sciences companies lose scope, authority, and revenue. At CDC, he investigated international disease outbreaks, developed technology for vaccination programs, and served as Chief of Operations for the HHS Emergency Command Center after 9/11.
