Leland Melvin Speaker Profile: At A Glance

Leland Melvin is a space thought leader, astronaut, engineer, educator, and former NFL wide receiver for the Detroit Lions. Leland is the first person drafted into the National Football League to have also flown in space. He was featured on National Geographic's One Strange Rock, hosted by Will Smith, where he explained how his brain repaired itself after an injury that left him deaf and almost stopped him from ever going to space. Even after being medically disqualified to fly in space by NASA flight surgeons, Leland completed two Space Shuttle missions to help build the International Space Station.

Leland Melvin is a former NFL player, astronaut, engineer, author, and executive producer, celebrated for his remarkable journey from professional sports to space exploration and education advocacy. Born on February 15, 1964, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Melvin was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1986 and later signed with the Dallas Cowboys. However, a hamstring injury ended his football career before it fully took off. Undeterred, Melvin pursued a career in science and joined NASA as an engineer. He later became an astronaut, flying on two Space Shuttle Atlantis missions to the International Space Station in 2008 and 2009. During his time at NASA, he also served as the Associate Administrator for Education, inspiring countless young minds to pursue careers in STEM. Melvin authored Chasing Space, a memoir that chronicles his journey from the football field to the stars, and co-created the Space Chasers graphic novel series, blending science and adventure to captivate young readers. As an advocate for education and outreach, he has received numerous honorary doctorates in recognition of his impact on science, technology, and advocacy. He is also an executive producer of The Space Race, a documentary that highlights the experiences of Black astronauts. In August 2024, Melvin received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to STEAM and aerospace education. Leland Melvin’s story continues to inspire and motivate people worldwide, demonstrating the power of perseverance and the limitless possibilities of combining sports, science, storytelling, and mentorship, inspiring future generations to break barriers and reach for the stars.
