Nyle DiMarco is a Deaf actor, producer, and activist dedicated to advancing authentic representation in media. His 2022 memoir Deaf Utopia became a New York Times bestseller, and his directorial debut—the Apple Original Films documentary Deaf President Now!—made history as the first major production led by over 40 Deaf crew members. Centering a groundbreaking “DEAF POV” approach, the film earned two Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Directing, making DiMarco the first Deaf person ever nominated in that category.
In 2022, Nyle DiMarco published his memoir Deaf Utopia, which became a New York Times best seller. This year marked his directorial debut with Apple Original Films documentary Deaf President Now!
As co-director, Nyle led a historic production with more than 40 Deaf crew members. Not only that, he introduced a new style concept DEAF POV, groundbreaking for centering Deaf visual language and storytelling on its own terms. The DPN movie is about a massive protest at the world's only Deaf university, Gallaudet University, that forever shaped Deaf/disability rights in America—a moment when deaf students demanded for a deaf president and ended 124 years of hearing paternalism.
The movie was nominated for two Emmy awards, including one for Outstanding Directing category. He's the first Deaf person ever nominated for an Emmy in Directing. The film was also recently nominated in four categories for Critics Choice awards (Best Documentary, Best Directing, Best Editing, and Best Political Documentary).
DEAF U, which Nyle DiMarco executive produced, won Best Unstructured Series and received the Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Reality TV in 2021. With 50% of the crew being Deaf—a historic first—the series redefined inclusivity in television production.
In 2022, Nyle produced the Netflix documentary short AUDIBLE, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject the same year CODA made history at the Oscars. That same year, his memoir DEAF UTOPIA: A Memoir—and a Love Letter to a Way of Life became a New York Times bestseller. The book explores his journey growing up in a multigenerational Deaf family, breaking barriers in Hollywood, and celebrating Deaf culture and identity.
Nyle made his directorial debut in 2025 with DEAF PRESIDENT NOW, an Apple Original Films documentary that earned two Emmy nominations—for Outstanding Documentary and Outstanding Directing—making him the first Deaf director ever nominated in the directing category. The film also received four Critics Choice nominations. With a record-breaking crew of more than 40 Deaf professionals, the film chronicles the historic 1988 Gallaudet University protest that ended 124 years of hearing paternalism and led to the appointment of the school’s first Deaf president—a defining moment that helped pave the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Nyle is currently developing a diverse slate of projects across genres, from scripted television and feature films to documentaries. Among them is a Netflix series in development with author Colleen Hoover, adapting one of her books for television. Whether starring, producing, or directing, Nyle remains committed to bold storytelling and authentic representation.
