RuPaul Charles is best known as the vibrant host and executive producer of the global phenomenon RuPaul’s Drag Race, which has amassed over 100 episodes on VH1. In 2017, RuPaul won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality Competition – the second consecutive year winning the award. RuPaul Andre Charles was born in San Diego, California, and was raised by his mother and three sisters after his parents' divorce. At the age of 15, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied performing arts. RuPaul initially struggled as a musician and filmmaker but gained local fame performing in Atlanta’s club scene. His first major exposure came in 1989 when he appeared as a dancer in the music video for The B-52s' "Love Shack."
In the early 1990s, RuPaul moved to New York City, where he became a prominent figure in the nightlife and drag scenes. He released his debut album, Supermodel of the World, in 1993, featuring the hit single "Supermodel (You Better Work)." This success catapulted him into mainstream fame. The show has spawned multiple international versions and earned numerous awards, including several Primetime Emmys. RuPaul's influence extends beyond television; he has appeared in films such as Crooklyn, The Brady Bunch Movie, and But I'm a Cheerleader, and he created and starred in the Netflix series AJ and the Queen.
Outside of entertainment, RuPaul is a published author with books like Lettin' It All Hang Out and GuRu.
