Steve Case Speaker Profile: At A Glance
Steve Case is one of the world’s most accomplished entrepreneurs—a pioneer who made the Internet part of everyday life and orchestrated the largest corporate merger in history.
Steve Case's entrepreneurial journey began after his graduation from Williams College with a degree in political science. His early career included roles at Procter & Gamble and Pizza Hut before he joined Control Video Corporation, which later became Quantum Computer Services and eventually America Online (AOL). As CEO of AOL from 1993, Case was instrumental in transforming it into the leading internet service provider of its time. Under his leadership, AOL became the first Internet company to go public and achieved a peak market valuation that made it one of the most significant tech companies of the 1990s. The iconic "You've Got Mail" greeting became synonymous with the early days of the internet.
In 2001, Case masterminded the historic merger of AOL with Time Warner, a deal valued at over $160 billion, which at the time was the largest merger in business history. However, the merger faced significant challenges, leading to Case stepping down as chairman in 2003. Despite these difficulties, his impact on the digital landscape was indelible.
Post-AOL, Steve Case focused on venture capital and philanthropy. He founded Revolution in 2005, a Washington, D.C.-based investment firm that has invested in numerous successful companies, including Zipcar, Sweetgreen, and DraftKings. Revolution’s Rise of the Rest initiative aims to support entrepreneurship across the United States, particularly in cities outside of the traditional tech hubs of Silicon Valley, New York, and Boston.
In addition to his business ventures, Case is dedicated to philanthropy. Along with his wife Jean, he established the Case Foundation, which focuses on leveraging the internet and entrepreneurial approaches to strengthen the social sector. They are signatories of The Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes. Case has also been a vocal advocate for immigration reform and policies that support startups and innovation.
Steve Case’s influence extends beyond business and philanthropy into public service, having served on various governmental advisory councils and boards, including the Smithsonian Institution, where he was Chair of the Board of Regents. His books, including "The Third Wave: An Entrepreneur’s Vision of the Future" and "The Rise of the Rest," reflect his vision for the future of technology and entrepreneurship.
