Styx is an American rock band formed in Chicago in 1972, known for their distinctive blend of progressive rock, hard rock, and pop rock. The original lineup included Dennis DeYoung, James "J.Y." Young, John "J.C." Curulewski, and brothers Chuck and John Panozzo. The band gained early attention with songs like "Lady," which became a breakthrough hit in 1975, leading to a contract with A&M Records and setting the stage for their rise to prominence. The addition of guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw in 1975 marked a significant turning point. His contributions helped shape the band's sound, leading to a series of successful albums. "The Grand Illusion" (1977) achieved triple-platinum status and featured hits like "Come Sail Away" and "Fooling Yourself." Subsequent albums, including "Pieces of Eight" (1978) and "Cornerstone" (1979), continued this success, with "Babe" becoming their first No. 1 single in the U.S. In 1981, Styx released "Paradise Theatre," a concept album that became their most commercially successful, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album included popular tracks such as "The Best of Times" and "Too Much Time on My Hands." Their 1983 album, "Kilroy Was Here," featured the hit "Mr. Roboto" and showcased the band's willingness to experiment with theatrical elements and storytelling in their music. Despite lineup changes and periods of hiatus, Styx has remained active, continuing to tour and release new music. The current lineup includes original members James "J.Y."
