Blackhorse Lowe is a filmmaker from the Navajo Nation, recognized for his distinctive storytelling that blends personal, psychedelic, and spiritual elements. Growing up in a traditional Navajo household involved in the Native American Church, Lowe's upbringing deeply influences his work, leading him to explore themes of balance, nature, and spirituality. Lowe's career began with his feature directorial debut, "5th World," which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. He continued to gain recognition with his short film "Shimásáni," which earned the New Mexico New Visions Contract Award and the Panavision Award. The film premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival and was featured at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In 2012, Lowe was named a Sundance Institute Native Producing Fellow. He directed multiple episodes of the acclaimed FX series "Reservation Dogs," contributing to its groundbreaking portrayal of Native American life. His 2019 feature film "Fukry" won Best Film at the Terres en Vues/Land InSights Montreal First Peoples Festival in 2020. Lowe's commitment to Indigenous storytelling is further demonstrated through his involvement in various Sundance Institute labs, including NativeLab, Producers Lab, and Screenwriters Writers Lab. He currently resides in Oklahoma as a Tulsa Artist Fellow, where he continues to work on independent and collaborative film projects within the global Indigenous film community.
