Brett Brown is an American professional basketball coach with a diverse and international career spanning over three decades. Born in South Portland, Maine, in 1961, Brown was a standout guard at South Portland High School and later at Boston University, where he played under legendary coach Rick Pitino. After a brief stint in the corporate world, he moved to Australia in the mid-1980s, where he began his coaching journey in the National Basketball League (NBL). His coaching career in Australia included head coaching roles with the North Melbourne Giants, leading them to an NBL championship and earning Coach of the Year honors in 1994, and the Sydney Kings. Brown also served as head coach of the Australian national team from 2009 to 2012, guiding them to the quarterfinals in the 2012 London Olympics. In 2002, Brown returned to the NBA as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, where he contributed to the team's four championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007). He was known for his ability to develop players and his deep understanding of the game. In 2013, he was appointed head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, where he oversaw the team's rebuilding process, known as "The Process." Under his leadership, the 76ers made significant strides, culminating in three consecutive playoff appearances from 2018 to 2020. Brown was recognized for his commitment to player development and his emphasis on building a strong team culture. After parting ways with the 76ers in 2020, Brown returned to the Spurs as an assistant coach in 2022. In this role, he has continued to mentor young players and contribute to the team's development efforts. His experience and leadership have been invaluable assets to the Spurs' coaching staff. Beyond his coaching duties, Brown is passionate about giving back to the basketball community. He has organized annual clinics for local coaches, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and mentorship. His initiatives, such as the "Bounce Out the Stigma" clinic for children with autism, reflect his commitment to using basketball as a tool for positive social impact. Brown's holistic approach to coaching and his dedication to developing both players and coaches have left a lasting legacy in the basketball world.
