Gillian Romaine Tett OBE is a British journalist and anthropologist who applied ethnographic methods to financial journalism across a roughly 30-year career at the Financial Times. She serves as chair of the FT editorial board and U.S. editor-at-large, writes a weekly column, and co-founded FT Moral Money. In October 2023 she was appointed Provost of King’s College, Cambridge; her books include the NYT bestseller Fool’s Gold and Anthro-Vision.
Gillian Romaine Tett OBE is a journalist, author and social anthropologist whose work has reframed how markets, institutions and culture are reported and understood. At the Financial Times she has held senior editorial and reporting roles — including U.S. managing editor, capital markets editor, deputy Lex editor, Tokyo bureau chief and correspondent — and currently serves as chair of the editorial board and U.S. editor-at-large, writing weekly columns on economics, finance, politics and society.
Trained as an anthropologist at Clare College, Cambridge, with a PhD based on fieldwork in the former Soviet Union, Tett introduced ethnographic perspectives to business reporting. She co-founded FT Moral Money, the FT’s sustainability and ESG newsletter (SABEW best newsletter awards, 2020 and 2021), and is the author of four books: Saving the Sun; Fool’s Gold (a New York Times bestseller and Financial Book of the Year winner); The Silo Effect; and Anthro-Vision. Her journalism has been recognized with Columnist of the Year (2014), Journalist of the Year (2009), the Wincott Prize (2007), the Royal Anthropological Institute Marsh Award (2014) and the American Anthropological Association Presidents’ Award (2021).
Tett is widely cited for anticipating major financial and social shifts — warning about the credit crunch prior to 2008 and later identifying the dynamics behind populism and fintech risk — and she frequently appears at universities, corporate events and policy forums to translate social science into actionable insight for leaders and investors. She holds honorary degrees from institutions including Carnegie Mellon and Exeter, and in 2024 was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to economic journalism.
